A course film for Dublin City University

DCU’s Communications team needed a short film to bring students to a language degree. We made it in one day on campus, with its graduates and students on camera.

When

What they needed

A short film for a language degree covering five languages, selling study abroad and careers at a time when AI was seen as a threat to language learning.

What we filmed

One full day on campus: two graduates and three students, each with a line in a different language, then students and lecturers at work in the language lab.

What we delivered

  • A 71-second course film
  • Subtitles in English and five languages

Video for universities and schools, explained

Students and graduates, in their own words. For DCU’s language degree, two graduates working in industry and three current students each spoke a line in a different language, then we filmed students and lecturers at work in the language lab. The finished film is 71 seconds long.

Keep it short and plan the cut-downs before the shoot. DCU asked for short social versions alongside the main film, and the subtitles came in English and in each speaker’s language. The Dublin School of Music went the other way, with a two-minute film carried by its owner, teachers, students and parents, so families hear from every side of the school.

Let the people who benefit make the case, then make one clear ask. The DCU Educational Trust’s film for its Alumni Fund is told by graduates and ambassadors, from a GAA footballer to researchers and current students. From the same shoot we cut a 16-second version as a social ad that ends on where to give.

TU Dublin’s appeal for its Exceptional Circumstances Fund explains what the fund does and who it helps, through staff and Students’ Union speakers, with a tour of the Grangegorman campus. For a capital campaign, show the plan: Rathdown School’s Campus Master Plan film pairs interviews with its head, staff and students with drone shots of the grounds, for parents and past pupils.

Around the timetable, and with as little fuss as possible. For DCU, graduates and students arrived at half nine, every spoken line was filmed by lunch, and the afternoon went on the language lab and the campus. We send the questions in advance and keep the crew small, so nobody misses more of their day than they need to.

With younger people we give them space. At Foróige’s youth assembly that meant filming without getting in anyone’s face and keeping an eye on how they were coping, which is what Foróige wrote about us on Clutch. Consent forms, including for anyone under 18, are usually arranged by the school or college, since you hold the relationships. We send our form for signing, and on the day we can help gather forms, with an iPad so people can sign electronically.

Yes, and we’re used to it. We’ve won tenders with the Irish Universities Association and the Department of Education, among others, and our work for the IUA took us to all seven of its universities. The paperwork is ready: a current tax clearance certificate, insurance letters for venues on request, and one fixed price in writing, plus VAT, before anything starts.

Our insurance covers €6.5 million public liability, €13 million employer’s liability and €1.3 million professional indemnity, and we invoice against your purchase order. If your department simply needs a written quote, an estimate from our calculator and a call with us is all it takes. The full checklist is on our public sector page.

Yes. We filmed the ADVANCE 2022 conference in Trinity’s Regent House for the ADAPT Centre and cut it into a one-minute highlight film, and we can stream an event live too. We can even edit on the day: we’ve done it for the Department of Education.

Usually five to ten business days from the shoot to your first cut. A rush edit in 24 to 48 hours is possible at an extra cost.

Yes. Captions come on every film, so it works with the sound off and for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. DCU’s course film has subtitles in English and in each speaker’s language.
