Why Dublin cycles, for Dublin City Council

Dublin City Council wants more people on bikes. For Bike Week 2023 we filmed ten Dubliners on why they cycle, and the Pedalpalooza parade on the Sunday, and the council counted over 170,000 views of the ten films on social media. We’ve since made films for its cargo bike scheme, its cycle lockers and its bike bunkers.

Three years of cycling films

One Bike Week, then a film for each new scheme the council wanted people to try.

  1. Step 01

March 2023: the Bike Week brief

The council’s walking and cycling officer asked for five to ten people on different bikes, telling their own stories, with stills for its digital panels. We filmed over three days, on 26 and 27 April and 8 May.

  2. Step 02

    May 2023: Why We Cycle

The ten films went to the council between 9 and 19 May, each subtitled for accessibility, and it began posting them in mid-May. A cut with all ten stories followed on 23 May.

  3. Step 03

    21 May 2023: Pedalpalooza

We filmed the parade from Capel Street to Ringsend Park on the Sunday and had the film with the council on the Tuesday. It then asked to see the whole parade, so we added two drone shots of the full line of bikes.

  4. Step 04

    2024 to 2025: cargo bikes

A film on the council’s cargo bike scheme, with the businesses using it, plus five short cuts for social media, subtitled. Signed off in March 2025.

  5. Step 05

    2026: lockers and bunkers

A film on the new cycle lockers, approved on 27 May 2026 and on the council’s social channels by 4 June, and three social films on the bike bunkers.
