From PE class to the national arena, for Basketball Ireland
Basketball Ireland wanted more girls to take up the sport. Its Grants and Participation Manager wrote the story: a girl sees Ireland’s captain on her phone, tries basketball in PE, joins a club and ends up at an international game. We shot it over three days in Dublin and Cork in 2023, with Ireland captain Edel Thornton as herself and real club players and their family in the other parts.

What they needed
A film for social media that would inspire girls to try basketball and show them the way in, from school to a club, with the federation’s app and streaming channel along the way.
What we filmed
A day at the National Basketball Arena, then a weekend in Cork at a home, a school, a club and a Super League game. Basketball Ireland felt it would be more real with a young player and her own family, so that’s who we filmed.

How it ran
Two cities, real players and a client who came back.
Step 01
June 2023: the story
Basketball Ireland sent the concept and asked for real players rather than actors.
Step 02
29 July 2023: Tallaght
The first day of filming, at the National Basketball Arena.
Step 03
Autumn 2023: Cork
A weekend at home, at school, at the club and at a Super League game.
Step 04
November to December: the edit
The first cut went over on 23 November, then sound design and the grade.
Step 05
2024: back again
Basketball Ireland came back the following year for a summer camp film.
